Blessing

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land I will show you… I will bless you… so that you will be a blessing… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’” (Genesis 12:1–3)
We use the word blessing a lot. “I’m blessed.” “What a blessing!” “God bless you.” But in Scripture, blessing means more than just something nice—it’s God’s way of restoring life to the full. God’s blessing is His powerful, creative Word bringing wholeness, peace, rest, and abundance back to His creation. That was His design in Eden but sin shattered it. Humanity saw, took, and fell—again and again. God’s world, meant to be full of life and blessing, became marked by death and curse. Yet God did not give up.
In Genesis 12, God begins again. He calls Abram—not because Abram was perfect, but because God is faithful. Abram is asked to leave everything behind: his land, his family, his safety. The promise? That he will become the father of a great nation, and through him, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
Though Abram stumbles (giving away his wife to save himself!), God’s promise stands. God’s plan continues, leading through Israel’s long and complicated story all the way to Jesus—the true Seed of Abraham, the one who comes to crush the serpent’s head, to restore life, and to bless every nation. Jesus is the fulfillment of that ancient promise. In Him, just like Abram, we are called back into life with God.
