My God is My Help

The parable of the rich man and Lazarus is striking in its contrasts. One man lived in luxury, dressed in fine robes, and feasted every day. The other, Lazarus, lay at his gate, covered in sores, longing for even a scrap of food. One had everything in this life; the other had nothing. And yet, in the end, both faced the same reality—death.
But here is where their paths truly diverged. The rich man, who had lived in comfort, found himself in torment, while Lazarus was carried to the side of Abraham. The difference? Lazarus had something the rich man lacked—his name testified to it: My God is My Help.
Jesus isn’t teaching that the poor automatically go to heaven and the rich to hell. Instead, He reveals a deeper truth: where we place our trust matters. The Pharisees, whom Jesus addressed, loved money and status. They sought security in their wealth rather than in God. But Lazarus trusted in God alone. Though he suffered, his help came not from riches or earthly comfort but from the Lord.
This parable reminds us that we, too, are beggars before God. No wealth, achievement, or good work can earn us a place at His heavenly banquet. Instead, we must come empty-handed, confessing, My God is my help. And the good news? In Jesus, God has already provided for us. Through His death and resurrection, we are welcomed into His eternal feast, not because of what we have, but because of who He is—our Savior and our Help.
Whether rich or poor, strong or weak, may we live each day in this confession: My God is my help.
In Christ,
Pastor Nick
